Lane Rental Scheme Cuts Disruption by 50%
Following the introduction of lane rental schemes in London, road works disruption has fallen by almost 50%.
The scheme originally came into effect on the 11th June 2012 on some of the busiest roads in London. Now a study has found that 47% of roads users have experienced a reduction in delays in the busiest areas.
The scheme works by discouraging utility companies from carrying out disruptive work during peak times by charging more for lane rental. The scheme has seen 90% of utility companies and 99% of TFL works avoid these peak times; surplus money raised is being reinvested in congestion reduction measures.
Alan Bristow, director of road space management at TfL, said: “The introduction of the UK’s first lane rental scheme in London has already delivered significant benefits across the capital.
“By using this scheme to help fund more innovation and world-leading technologies, we can continue to reduce disruption and keep all road users on London’s road network moving.”
The scheme is also encouraging the use of quick drying materials, reducing reopening time significantly; the practise has helped save 2,700 days of disruption across London.
